EMERGENCY CANCELLATION: 18 Mile & 12K Races - Sunday, October 12th

Dear 18 Mile & 12K Race Participants,

Due to the extreme and dangerous weather forecast for this Sunday, October 12th, we are issuing an Emergency Cancellation for both the 18 Mile and 12K Races.

The safety of our runners, volunteers, first responders, and the community is our absolute top priority.

After extensive coordination with local and regional emergency management, law enforcement, and meteorologists, it is clear that the storm conditions will make a safe and successful event logistically impossible.

Specific Safety Concerns for Race Day Include:

  • Significant Flooding: A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect, with a strong storm surge that will prevent low-tide runoff, leading to moderate to major coastal flooding and road closures along the course.

  • Dangerous Winds: A High Wind Advisory and Gale Watch are in effect, forecasting sustained winds of 40-55 mph, which would pose a serious risk to all participants and race infrastructure.

  • Severe Inclement Weather: The forecast includes a high chance of heavy, sustained rain throughout Sunday.

The National Weather Service has warned of a strong coastal storm bringing these conditions and the potential for damaging winds up to 60 mph. Proceeding with the event would place all personnel in harm's way.

We understand this cancellation is frustrating, and we sincerely thank you for your patience as we finalize the next steps. Your participation in this event is critically important to the mission of St. Francis Community Center. Every registration supports our vital community work. A separate email from Executive Director Kevin Walsh will be sent shortly with full details regarding packet/shirt distribution/pickup and a summary of how your support makes a direct, positive impact in our community.

Please stay safe and monitor local emergency alerts.

Sincerely,
18 Mile & 12K Race Committee
